4 Horsemen Figurines

Project type

4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Date

2026

This set of hand‑painted figurines was created as an exploration of consequence, imbalance, and the forces that shape human history. The imagery of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death—has long represented not characters, but conditions: outcomes born from choices made over time.
Rather than treating the figures as collectibles, Rocky Shores Woodworks approached them as small‑scale sculptural works. Each figure was individually hand‑painted with layered washes, weathering, and controlled distressing to emphasize age, decay, and use. No two surfaces were treated the same. Armor, bone, flesh, and terrain were finished to feel worn rather than new—as if each horseman has traveled a long distance before arriving here.
Color choices were intentionally restrained. Muted metals, bruised tones, and desaturated organic colors allow texture and form to lead the eye rather than decoration. The horses and riders remain interconnected with their environments, reinforcing the idea that these forces do not exist apart from the world they move through.
Displayed together, the set functions as a single narrative. Individually, each figure carries its own weight and presence. The scale invites close inspection, rewarding time spent observing details rather than overwhelming the viewer at a distance.
This work was created once, as a complete set, with no intention of duplication. The figures exist as a reminder that myth persists because it reflects lived reality—and that even small objects can carry heavy stories when handled with purpose.
