Sliding door

This piece began as a need for separation without isolation—a way to divide space while still allowing light, movement, and presence to pass through. Rather than treating the door as a purely functional element, Rocky Shores Woodworks approached it as an opportunity to create something that could anchor the room and quietly shape how the space is experienced.
The sliding door was built from a live‑edge wood slab, chosen for its natural voids and organic movement. Those voids were intentionally preserved and inlaid with deep blue epoxy, allowing the piece to retain its raw character while introducing contrast, depth, and light. The epoxy fills what might otherwise be considered flaws, redefining them as essential features rather than imperfections.
Mounted on exposed sliding hardware, the door remains visibly transitional—never fully static, never completely hidden. Whether open or closed, it continues to participate in the space. Light shifts across the surface throughout the day, changing how the inlay reads and reminding viewers that the piece is as much about movement as it is about form.
What was created is not just a door, but a threshold—one that holds the balance between openness and division, utility and expression. It performs its role without disguising itself as something lesser. Instead, it stands unapologetically as both structure and artwork.
This piece was designed specifically for its environment and built once, allowing material, function, and story to coexist without compromise.
