Alligator table

Project type

Furnitiure

Date

2021

This piece was commissioned for a client in Florida who wanted a functional object that still carried a sense of place and conversation. Rather than creating something ornamental, the goal was to integrate imagery that felt grounded in the environment the piece would live in—familiar, unmistakable, and woven naturally into daily life.
Rocky Shores Woodworks designed a solid wood side table featuring a carved alligator form encapsulated beneath a clear epoxy inlay. The carving is intentionally subtle, allowing the depth and reflection of the epoxy to distort the image slightly depending on light and viewing angle. The result is a surface that reveals itself slowly rather than all at once.
The alligator—an ever‑present part of Florida’s landscape—acts as both subject and symbol. It represents resilience, adaptation, and quiet awareness, mirroring how the table functions within the home. What appears at first glance as a straightforward tabletop becomes a layered surface where form, transparency, and reflection interact.
Designed for everyday use, the table brings conversation into ordinary moments. It is a piece meant to be noticed without demanding attention, existing comfortably between art and furniture. Like the environment that inspired it, the work is calm on the surface, with depth beneath.
This piece was built once, for one place, and shaped by the surroundings it was created for.
