Sun and Moon

Project type

Art

Date

2024

This piece was created for a client who values conversation, contrast, and lived experience. Her home is filled with unique objects gathered through years of travel, each item carrying its own history and point of view. Entertaining is central to how the space is used—not just as a gathering place, but as an invitation to observe, question, and discuss.
While sitting together in her living room, it became clear that she has a deep interest in the duality of life—light and dark, openness and privacy, the seen and unseen. That understanding shaped the direction of the work.
Rocky Shores Woodworks designed a stained‑glass‑inspired wood carving with epoxy inlay, built specifically to fit the irregular transom windows above the front door. The imagery of the sun and moon reflects opposing forces existing in balance, while the segmented pattern allows light to move through the piece differently throughout the day.
By placing the work at the front entry, the piece becomes both an introduction and a threshold. Guests experience it as they enter the home, while passersby catch glimpses of color, light, and form from the outside. The work exists in between—private and public, interior and exterior—much like the themes it represents.
This piece was designed not as decoration, but as a conversation—one that begins before the door is even opened.
