This series was created for a father who wanted to give each of his three children a Christmas gift that felt deeply personal, while remaining equal in intention and presence. He was clear from the beginning—there should be no sense of favoritism. The pieces needed to belong together, yet still allow each child to see themselves reflected in their own.
During our conversations, the topic of animals came up naturally while he was sharing stories about his children. Each child had a favorite animal—one tied closely to personality, curiosity, or memory. Rather than assigning symbolism after the fact, those animals became the foundation of the design.
Rocky Shores Woodworks created three individual carved panels: a snake, an alligator, and a dog. Each animal was carved directly into solid wood, allowing grain movement, texture, and form to inform the final shape. Clear epoxy inlay was used selectively to protect the carvings and add depth without overpowering the natural material.
The pieces were intentionally similar in size, format, and presence, ensuring equality in presentation, while the imagery itself allowed for difference. Each carving stands on its own, yet the set functions as a unified whole—three distinct identities connected by shared origin and intent.
Designed as gifts, these pieces were never meant to explain themselves fully. Their meaning lives with the family they were created for. Together, they reflect a parent’s recognition that children do not need to be the same to be valued equally—only seen, understood, and supported as individuals.
Built once and created specifically for this family, the series carries a story that cannot be reproduced—because the story itself belongs only to them.
